Hospitality & Community

Community shows up in 早餐 even when families aren’t eating together. It can look like shared norms or like people actively helping strangers.

Taipei

In Taipei, community often appears as coordination among strangers, belonging through shared rules that keep the flow smooth.

Tainan

In Tainan, community often appears as relational hospitality; people take responsibility for helping you succeed inside the system, not just moving you through it.

  • Bao An Road Rice Cake (Day 14): one woman multitasking; noticed my confusion, brought English 菜单, explained carefully anyway.

  • Open kitchen (Day 7): visibility builds trust quickly; reduces need for explanation.

  • 菜单: 菜单 translated into over 三种语言 define who is legible/literate in the 国家; having 菜单 in more than 一种语言 is a systematic form of accepting differences
